Located at Robertson Barracks and RAAF Darwin, the project involved the construction, finance and operation of two behind-the-meter solar facilities, with a combined capacity of approximately 14.5 MW, with integrated BESS systems.
The project is the first solar PPA undertaken by Defence, providing up to 40% of Robertson Barracks and RAAF Darwin’s electricity requirements.
The project faced complex regulatory and interface constraints, with the Northern Territories' Power and Water Corporation (PWC) dealing with a thin network and unprecedented network changes caused by rooftop solar at the time. The project incorporated a market leading weather forecasting system, the integration of BESS, and an innovative scheduled dispatch system to ensure it was able to meet PWC operational and regulatory requirements.
